Tenor Sax Mouthpiece
One of the most popular saxophones used these days are the tenor saxophones. The other commonly used saxophones are the alto and baritone types which are however less popular than the tenor type. A Tenor sax mouthpiece is a modern musical instrument which is used to play jazz music.
It is very closely associated with jazz music and is considered as the signature instrument responsible for jazz music.
Carved in the shape of a cone the tenor saxophone is made usually from brass and has a single reed tenor sax mouthpiece from which it can be played. It came into existence in 1840 and its inventor was Adolphe Sax.
Initially it was invented to support the bands and orchestra but with passage of time it specialized itself in the production of jazz music which is now the hot favorite of many people. The inner chamber of the tenor sax mouthpiece is usually in the form of a square or is rounded. Also the conical shape of the tenor imparts good acoustic properties to it.
The tenor saxophone is made from brass however to protect it from corrosion it is usually plated with gold or silver which serves a dual purpose. One it enhances the quality of the sound and improves its appearance and secondly protects it from corrosion. It has a mouthpiece on one side and has a bell shaped structure on the other side.
The Tenor sax mouthpiece forms the input device whereas the bell shaped structure forms the output medium. On the body of the saxophone are different holes which can be pressed and made air tight by usage of pads. It is by coordination of the holes different notes can be produced.
The tenor saxophone is more complicated than the other saxophones and it is therefore difficult for an amateur to learn to play saxophone on this type. This is why people usually learn to play a saxophone on the alto type and then later on proceed towards the tenor type.
The tenor sax mouthpiece has a high baffled mouthpiece which is really important for the production of jazz music. What happens actually in this saxophone is that the ceiling of the mouthpiece is pretty close to the reed which produces bright sound which can easily pass through the amplified equipment thus producing greater quality.
Also this saxophone has a large tip opening which provides an opportunity to the saxophonist to produce great variations in sound which are very important and essential for jazz music. The tenor saxophone is larger in size than the alto type and has a larger tenor sax mouthpiece and reed.
Sound is produced when air is blown in through the tenor sax mouthpiece which in turn makes the reed to vibrate thus the producing the required acoustic characteristics. The mouthpiece should be flexible enough and that is why it is made of soft materials like plastic and bronze.
The pitching key used for this saxophone is B-flat and this is usually employed as a transporting instrument because if you play the note C then you will automatically be transported to B-flat note producing its sound. This tenor saxophone is very popular with military bands and forms a part of almost every concert.
It has the unique quality of mixing very well with other music forms and has a part to play in almost every other music form may it be rock music or African music. Having a high quality tenor sax mouthpiece is a very important part of making sure the music you make sounds as good as it possibly can.
